BEZALEL SCHOOL JERUSALEM PALESTINE Art Menorah Hannukah Lamp Jewish RABAN ZeevDescription
Here's a unique and very beautiful metal (brass I believe) Menorah made by the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem,Palestine.
The Menorah is a unique BEZALEL Menorah. The Menora has on it engraved the Bezalel name in Hebrew and the world Jerusalem (Yerushalem) on the top right above the jug of oil on the front of the Menora.
The design for this Menorah is from the British Mandatory Period and was most likely made by Ze'ev Raban, done anytime between the 1920's to 1960's. These Menora's were usually sold to tourists or visitors to the Bezalel Academy's overseas Jewish Art Exhibits. If this were an original Hannukiyah it would sell for at least 00, but since I cannot prove when this particular Menorah was made I can only say that it's "Bezalel like". I have seen on Ebay others selling an identical Menora for over 00! There's no question that the Menorah was made from the ORIGINAL MOLD of the Menorah.
I also should say that this piece as well as the others I am selling here on Ebay are authentic Bezalel pieces, there's just no way of me knowing when these were made. Dates vary from anywhere from the 1920's till the 1950's when the original molds to make these pieces were still in use.
This particular piece measures 7 (wide) x 9 (height) inches = 18 x 23cm. Excellent condition, ready for Chanukah use!
PS This Menora can use oil and wicks as well as candles
.
I cannot but say that the beauty of this Hanukiyah is not seen just by the scans below!
ON THE SYMBOLISM OF THIS MENORAH
First, the shape itself is Moorish-Spanish as were built the buildings and the Synagogues in Spain, adopted from Muslim architecture. The jug of oil on top is designed after the types of earthenware jugs found in Israel in archaeological digs going back to the 2nd Temple, Maccabean period. The Menora image in the center, with the 2 lions on its side is sort of a compromise between the opinion of Maimonides and the rest of the depictions of the Candelabra which existed in the Second Temple Period. Finally, the circular "flowers" on the front of the part which supports the candle holders is similar to the various flowery designs found on buildings and ossuaries from the 2nd Temple Period! The sockets for the oil themselves are similar to bullets! A fact quite appropriate for this Holiday which was miraculous in the Spiritual (jug of oil) as well as the military arena (the victory of the few against the many). SO MUCH HISTORY IN ONE HANUKIYA!
